They Came from Outer Space – Episode 13

In this episode we are taking a look at the Triton pepper’s progress in the 2 different hydroponic systems. The growth on these things is really cool and I am excited to share my grow! This episode also takes a look at the specific grow environments used on the International Space Station to learn a bit more about how astronauts are growing food in space.

Additionally, we will take a look at the specific type of pepper that was grown on the ISS and start some seeds of our own here on Earth!

Why grow food in space?

As humankind moves off of planet Earth to explore our universe the missions and journeys get longer and longer. People need to eat nutritious foods even while in orbit and beyond! We cannot logistically pack enough food to feed a crew into 1 spacecraft and have it travel for months on end into space, so there has to be a better solution.

By growing food in space, astronauts are able to provide supplemental food supplies and fresh nutrients to their bodies in a renewable way. NASA and other space agencies are investing a lot of time and brain power into perfecting growing plants in space. The 2022 season of They Came From Outer Space is taking a look at the technology and techniques behind growing peppers and other food crops on the in the unique circumstances of space.
